I get my ideas and inspiration from reading, from old master and contemporary paintings, from nature, and from delving into my own imagination. I particularly like traditional painting techniques that evolved in Europe. I often include images that have symbolic meaning that viewers can interpret in some personal way. I’m attracted to bright colors and I like to have a magical atmosphere in my paintings, and refer to my style of painting as magical realism. I keep sketchbooks in which I draw imagined ideas or sometimes something in front of me that I find interesting.

I challenge myself to be as deeply connected to the subject and process as I can. I grew up in Utah and like Utah and the West very much, especially for the skiing, hiking, and general natural beauty. I graduated in art from the University of Utah in 1990 and then moved to New York City, where I illustrated for magazines, book covers, and children's books. In 2000 I returned to Salt Lake and have been doing fine art full time ever since.
